Your Category C HGV training starts with support for your medical, licence application, and theory tests if required. Once cleared, you’ll begin practical Class 2 training with experienced instructors at a DVSA-approved training centre.
You’ll learn to safely drive and control a rigid HGV, covering junctions, roundabouts, urban driving, and hazard awareness. The course includes reversing exercises and daily walk-around safety checks to meet DVSA test standards.
Training is structured and tailored to your experience to build confidence quickly. You’ll complete the official reversing test and finish with a one-hour on-road DVSA driving test. Everything is designed to prepare you fully and maximise your chance of passing first time.

CAT C (Class 2) allows you to drive rigid HGVs over 3.5 tonnes with a trailer up to 750kg. CAT C+E (Class 1) allows you to drive articulated lorries and drawbar combinations with trailers over 750kg. CAT C is ideal for local and regional driving jobs, while CAT C+E is commonly used for long-distance, motorway, and higher-paying roles. Many new drivers start with CAT C before upgrading to CAT C+E.
No previous HGV or commercial driving experience is required. As long as you hold a full UK car licence and meet the medical requirements, you can start CAT C training as a complete beginner. The course is designed to take you from car driver to qualified HGV driver step by step.
Most CAT C practical courses take around 4 days, depending on your experience and confidence. This is in addition to completing the required theory tests and medical first.
With a CAT C licence, you can apply for a wide range of driving jobs such as delivery driver, refuse collection, plant and tipper work, pallet networks, and construction logistics. Many drivers use CAT C as a stepping stone before upgrading to CAT C+E (Class 1).
CAT C drivers in the UK typically earn between £30,000 and £45,000 per year, depending on location, experience, and shift patterns. Night shifts, overtime, and specialist roles can increase earning potential further.
