Explore Cat C / Class 2 training ↗A horsebox up to 3.5 tonnes can usually be driven with the appropriate car entitlement. A trailer over 750kg behind a C1 or Cat C vehicle requires the appropriate additional entitlement. Check your current licence and the complete combination before booking.
Have the plated maximum weight ready, including any trailer you intend to tow. A 7.5-tonne horsebox is not the same as a 7.5-tonne payload.
If you passed your car test before January 1997, you may already have C1. Check current entitlement, expiry dates and restriction codes.

C1 covers a horsebox over 3.5 tonnes and up to 7.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass, with a trailer up to 750kg. Check any restrictions on your licence and whether you already hold this entitlement.
For a rigid horsebox above 7.5 tonnes MAM, Category C is the relevant licence category. Towing a trailer over 750kg requires additional entitlement.
An empty vehicle does not change its plated maximum authorised mass. Choose your licence entitlement according to the relevant permitted weight, not just the weight on that journey.
Our courses provide licence training in the relevant training vehicle. Tell your adviser about your horsebox and any request to train in your own vehicle; this must be agreed separately.
Non-commercial carriage for personal use can be exempt from Driver CPC. Business and paid transport can involve different requirements. Discuss your actual use with your adviser rather than assuming every horsebox journey is exempt.
