HGV training courses in Cambridge
Cambridge combines a busy city supply network with links to the wider A14 and M11 corridors. Our HGV training courses cover articulated Class 1 vehicles and rigid Class 2 lorries. We help you choose the right starting point and understand how your practical preparation supports a professional driving career.
C+EArticulated lorries
Class 1 (C+E) training in Cambridge
Class 1 HGV training in Cambridge prepares you to manage an articulated vehicle and trailer safely. C+E is relevant to larger distribution movements beyond the city as well as depot operations. Develop confident observation, positioning and manoeuvring, with advice for both car-to-Class-1 and Class-2-to-Class-1 routes.
Our Class 2 training in Cambridge develops control of rigid HGVs used for local and regional deliveries. Safe turning, good mirrors and awareness of cyclists and pedestrians are particularly valuable in an urban setting. Your lessons build these skills alongside preparation for the practical test.
C1 driver training in Cambridge covers vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and up to 7.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass. This includes ambulances, horseboxes and motorhomes within that weight range.
Bus and PCV driver training in Cambridge prepares you for Category D vehicles with more than eight passenger seats. Professional bus driving also has Driver CPC requirements, subject to exemptions.
HIAB training in Cambridge covers the operation of lorry-mounted cranes. The training you need depends on the equipment, attachments and work involved, as well as your existing experience.
Driver CPC training in Cambridge supports professional HGV and bus drivers. Your training route depends on your current qualification and whether you drive in the UK or internationally.
Vehicle descriptions are a starting point. Check your individual entitlement and any restrictions against the official licence categories.

HGV theory and practical test preparation in Cambridge
Prepare for your HGV theory test, off-road exercises and on-road driving test. Our Cambridge training supports the skills and preparation needed for each stage.
BEFORE PRACTICAL TESTING
HGV theory test training in Cambridge
Prepare for your HGV theory test with online revision tools and support from your training adviser. Cambridge learners can study before their practical training begins. Theory tests take place at dedicated theory test centres.
The HGV part 3a test covers off-road exercises: an S-shaped reverse into a bay and, for tests with a trailer, uncoupling and recoupling. Practical preparation focuses on controlled manoeuvring and the procedures for your vehicle category.
The HGV part 3b test includes vehicle safety questions and an hour of practical road driving, including ten minutes of independent driving. The examiner assesses safe control, observation and anticipation. You must pass part 3a before taking part 3b.
Cambridge’s historic centre has controlled access and loading arrangements. For a delivery, check the current council guidance, the customer’s entrance and the permitted route before setting off. Knowing where the destination is does not establish that every approach is suitable for a lorry.
From the A14 and M11 to mixed urban traffic
Cambridge’s wider road links lead into environments shared with buses, cyclists and pedestrians. HGV preparation builds early observation, safe separation and deliberate positioning before a turn. These habits help when moving from a faster route into the city or a village approach.
Local instructors. Practical preparation. Our instructors are familiar with the area and the demands of the practical test. Your Cambridge HGV driving lessons focus on applying safe driving skills across different roads and situations.

Local insight from our recruitment team
Cambridge’s HGV job market
Cambridge’s university, business and visitor economy creates a distinctive setting for transport and supply work. City deliveries sit alongside wider regional distribution, giving Class 1 and Class 2 learners different career directions to explore. Our recruitment team helps you understand the working day as well as the job title.
University and city institutions
Supplying a complex city estate
The University of Cambridge publishes guidance for suppliers to agree delivery arrangements with the receiving department. It is a useful example of why site knowledge and good communication matter in institutional supply. Driving jobs may sit with external suppliers rather than the institution receiving the goods.
Local supply · Delivery planningCambridge and surrounding communities
Food, hospitality and trade deliveries
Deliveries serving shops, hospitality venues and trade customers can involve several stops and different unloading arrangements. Class 2 is relevant to rigid HGVs in this kind of work. Customer service and careful access planning are useful strengths to highlight when applying.
Class 2 · Multi-stop deliveryWider Cambridgeshire road network
Regional distribution careers
A Cambridge-based job search can extend to distribution depots elsewhere in Cambridgeshire. Class 1 supports articulated combinations, while Class 2 covers rigid vehicles. Compare the actual depot, vehicle and working pattern so the role fits both your qualification and your daily travel plans.
Class 1 & Class 2 · Wider opportunities

06 / Your questions
HGV training in Cambridge: your questions
Tell us where you’re starting from. We’ll help you work out the next step.
We provide Class 1 and Class 2 HGV training for learners across Cambridge and the surrounding area. Use the coverage guide above or call our Cambridge branch on 0333 335 5927. Tell us your postcode and current licence so we can guide you to the right course.
Do I need Class 2 before Class 1?
You can train towards Class 1 (C+E) from a car licence without first passing a separate Class 2 test, provided you meet the relevant provisional entitlement and qualification requirements. We also support drivers upgrading from Class 2. Your adviser will explain the preparation and tests for your route.
Are HGV and LGV training the same thing?
In lorry training, HGV means heavy goods vehicle and LGV means large goods vehicle. Our LGV training in Cambridge covers the lorry licence categories on this page. Class 1 means Category C+E; Class 2 means Category C.
Where do my Cambridge HGV driving lessons start?
Lesson meeting points vary. Your course adviser provides the meeting arrangements when booking, so you have the details you need before your Cambridge HGV training begins.
How long does HGV training in Cambridge take?
Your schedule depends on your current licence, the preparation you have already completed and your practical training needs. We’ll explain the theory, driving lessons and test arrangements for your course before you book.
Do you cover Histon, Waterbeach and Great Shelford?
Yes. Our Cambridge service covers these communities and the other named areas on the map. Your adviser takes care of the course arrangements and explains where to meet for lessons.
Will I need to understand Cambridge city-centre delivery restrictions?
For work involving the historic centre, route and access planning are important. Current council guidance and the receiving customer’s arrangements help you plan a suitable delivery. Your driving preparation develops observation and safe decision-making rather than relying on one fixed route.
Is Class 2 relevant to deliveries serving Cambridge institutions?
Rigid HGVs are used in many supply and delivery roles, for which Class 2 is relevant. The actual vehicle determines the entitlement needed. Institutional deliveries may be carried out by external food, trade or equipment suppliers.
Can I consider distribution work outside Cambridge after training?
Yes. Our recruitment support can help you explore the wider area as well as city-based roles. Look at travel to the depot and working hours alongside your preferred type of driving, and use your new licence to focus the search.
How much does HGV training in Cambridge cost?
We provide a personalised quote based on your current licence, chosen course and training needs. Call our Cambridge branch on 0333 335 5927 for a free quote and advice, or request Cambridge pricing and availability. Your adviser explains what your quote includes.
